Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) Hypoglycemia( low blood sugar levels) . This is a common thing in kids with type1 diabetes. Like there is a child named Mira (name changed) she is 8 years of age. She very often goes into hypoglycemic phase so earlier her parents get panicked and don’t know what to do in that condition. When they contacted us for her treatment and talked about this with us.
Dr. Prriti our mam and treating doctor firstly told them to remain calm so that they can smartly handle the situation. They got benefited with this and told us that now they are able to prevent her from going in this stage and if she goes in hypoglycemic stage they are able to handle it. Our motive of writing this blog is as our Dr. Prriti loves kids a lot and most of the parents of type 1 face this problem. With this knowledge they can handle the situation more effectively.

What to do in Hypoglycemia?
Stage 1 when sugar levels are In between 75 to 100 at this stage we give foods that’s high in fats because it will release sugar for longer period of time. Like apple or banana
Stage 2 when sugar levels are in between 65 to 75 at this stage we prefer to give combination of fats and carbs as it will release sugar and maintain it for longer period of time like sweetened lassi, banana sandwich, peanut butter sandwich, curd rice etc.
Stage 3 when sugar levels are below 65 give direct sugar, glucose, frooti, honey , fruit juice etc.
Rule of 15 for hypoglycemia
As Dr. Prriti says generally children suffering from type 1 diabetes often goes into hypoglycemia and it is a big challenge for us how to overcome this situation. So she suggest to follow the rule of 15.
What is rule of 15?
Rule of 15 means u have to give 15gr of sugar at that time and check your sugar levels again after 15 min and if your sugar levels are still lower than 70 Nano/gr then again repeat the process. If after 3rd time also your sugar level doesn’t reach the required level then talk to your dr. and give glucagon because that helps in releasing sugar from liver and will balance your sugar levels
What can we give for 15gr of sugar?
1) 3tsp. of sugar in 250ml of water
2) Can give cold drink
3) Half cane of juice
4) 1tsp honey
5) Frooti.
Now once the sugar levels has increase above 70 now what u can do so that it remains in that zone for that u have to have complex carbs with protein because fat never increase the sugar so that’s why don’t give fat to increase sugar levels.
So what can we give to maintain the sugar level in that zone.
1) Sweet lassi
2) Banana sandwich
3) Peanut butter sandwich
4) Roti with jaggery
5) Til ke ladoos with jaggery
So please follow this rule of 15, firstly make sure u won’t go in hypoglycemia phase but if by chance u go in that stage quickly follow this rule and stabilize your condition.
